I recently found a page on GitHub that lists more than 340 MCP connectors. If you do not know what an MCP is, the risks and benefits of it, then this blog entry is meant to help you!
Let's start at the very beginning.
What is an MCP?
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol.
Remember when every phone had its own charger, and none of them worked with anything else? Then most of the world settled on one. Now you can borrow anybody's cable.
MCP is that agreement but for software.
What does a connector actually do?
On its own, Claude only knows what you type into the chat. It cannot see your calendar, your files or inbox. So, a connector gives Claude permission to reach into a tool you already use and work with it.
Here is what that looks like in plain terms:
- Connect your calendar, and you can ask, "what does my week look like, and where do I have room for two more clients?"
- Connect your file storage, and you can ask, "pull the numbers out of last quarter's reports and put them in one place."
- Connect your project tool, and you can ask, "what is overdue, and who is waiting on me?"
Claude is going to act like your executive assistant accessing each connector to answer your specific questions.
Before you Connect Anything, Know This!
You need an account with the platform first. Always consider your own data safety and protection before making the connection. Remember, you are giving a third party platform access to your data and information.
Finding Connectors in Claude 101
Claude has a built-in directory, and it takes a few seconds to look through.
- Open Claude.
- Go to Settings, then Customize, then Connectors.
- Click the "+" button next to Connectors.
- Browse by category, or scroll the full list.
- Click one, read what it says it can do, then click Connect or Install.
- Sign in to that platform when it asks you to.
That is it! If you are on a Team or Enterprise plan then the designated Owner has to do this part from Organization settings.
The GitHub list I found is bigger and more technical. It is worth browsing so you can see the whole landscape. However, the directory inside Claude is where most people should start.
The benefits, said plainly
You stop being the copy-and-paste machine. Most of us lose real hours moving information from one window to another.
You get answers about your own business. Claude can look at your real numbers instead of guessing.
Nothing new to learn. You keep the tools you already use and Claude connects with them.
One place instead of eight tabs. You ask in one window and Claude goes and gets it.
The Risks You Should Know
I am not going to hand you the upside and skip this part.
Access is access. When you connect a tool, you are giving Claude permission to look at what is in there. Remember, email and file storage hold a lot more than people stop to think about.
Not every connector is built by the company you recognize. Some are official while others are built by outside developers. Read who made it before you connect it.
Client data raises the bar. I always say "just because you can, it doesn't mean you should." There are some records that you may not want to share such as health, financial records, or anything covered by a contract law. Practice caution and remember - am I allowed to do this?
Remember what you give permission to. Whatever you connect stays connected until you go remove it.
Which ones do you actually need?
I did not look at that list of 340 and think about what I could add. Instead, I thought about what a lot of business owners could stop paying for.
Most small businesses I talk to are carrying five, six, eight software subscriptions. Some of them do the same job, and many of them cannot communicate with each other effectively. Task switch then becomes a real pain point for the business owner.
Try this. Pull up your card statement and write down every software charge. Next to each one, write what it does and the last time you opened it. Most people find at least one they forgot about. If Claude can reach into the one tool you already trust, do you still need the other three?
